In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. At the time, only the South African Gold Krugerrand was available to investors and offered 22-karat gold content. Those coins were available only in 1 oz gold. In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint countered with the introduction of the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf, a .999 pure gold coin.
In 1982, the RCM began to expand the options available to investors in this series with the release of fractional-ounce coins. At the same time, the mint enhanced the gold fineness of the coins to .9999 pure gold. In the 21st century, the mint issued the first Gold MapleGrams, a collection of individual 1 Gram Gold Maple Leafs packaged together in a single card.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2022 Canadian Gold Coins in the MapleGrams. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief with now crown on her head. This design was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and is the fourth-generation effigy of the Queen to grace Canadian coins.
