Half a troy ounce of .999 fine rhodium, refined and stamped by Baird & Co of London. Serial numbered and sealed in tamper-evident packaging with its assay. The smallest rhodium bar we stock, and the lowest-cost way into the rarest of the precious metals. Priced live.
Buy a 1/2 oz rhodium bar refined by Baird & Co at their London facility — half a troy ounce (15.55 g) of .999 fine rhodium, individually serial numbered and sealed with its assay. Rhodium in minted bar form is genuinely hard to source, and at half an ounce this is the lowest-cost entry point into the metal that still comes stamped, sealed and independently verifiable.

What Is Stamped on the Bar
Each half ounce rhodium bar carries the Baird & Co mark and the company name, its identification as BULLION MERCHANTS, and the refinery location, LONDON. Beneath those sit the weight, HALF OUNCE, and the purity, 999.0 FINE RHODIUM, alongside the bar’s own serial number. Bars ship in one of two sealed holder styles; both carry the same refiner details and assay information.
Why Half an Ounce
Rhodium runs at a far higher price per ounce than gold, so a full ounce is a large single ticket. A half ounce bar cuts the entry cost roughly in half while giving you exactly the same refiner, the same .999 purity and the same sealed assay. It is also the easier size to sell on in one piece, since the buyer on the other side needs a smaller cheque to write.
Rhodium Bar or Rhodium Sponge?
A bar and an equivalent weight of rhodium sponge contain the same metal. What differs is what you are paying for around it.
- Bars carry a stamped refiner mark, a serial number and an assay, which is what makes them straightforward for the next buyer to accept. You pay a fabrication premium for that.
- Sponge skips the fabrication step entirely, so you get more rhodium per dollar, but verification falls to the buyer.
Choose the bar if resale matters to you. Choose sponge if raw metal per dollar matters more. See the full range of rhodium bars we stock, or the wider rhodium collection including coins.
What Rhodium Is Actually For
Rhodium is a platinum group metal recovered as a by-product of platinum and palladium mining, overwhelmingly in South Africa. The great majority of world supply is consumed by catalytic converters and never comes back to the investment market. Beyond that it is alloyed with platinum and palladium to raise resistance to corrosion and aggressive chemicals, and jewellers plate it in a thin layer over white gold and silver to stop tarnish and lift the finish. That industrial demand, set against a very small annual supply, is what drives the price and the volatility.

Before You Buy
Rhodium is not IRA-eligible in any form — the IRS approves only gold, silver, platinum and palladium for precious metals IRAs. Rhodium also trades far more thinly than gold or silver, so spreads are wider and the price moves harder in both directions. It is a small market, and that is the trade-off for the scarcity.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much rhodium is in a 1/2 oz bar?
Half a troy ounce, 15.55 grams, at .999 fineness.
Who makes this rhodium bar?
Baird & Co, a bullion refiner based in London. The company name, city and fineness are stamped on the bar itself.
Should I open the sealed packaging?
No. The seal carries the assay and links the bar to its serial number. An opened bar is harder to sell on and usually fetches less.
Is a rhodium bar better than rhodium sponge?
Neither is better metal — both are .999 rhodium. A bar is easier for a buyer to verify; sponge gives you more metal for the same money.
Can I put a rhodium bar in an IRA?
No. The IRS list covers gold, silver, platinum and palladium only.
How easy is rhodium to sell again?
Less easy than gold or silver. The market is thin, so expect a wider spread. We buy rhodium back directly, which is the simplest route for most holders.
