The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf in 1988. The series had previously launched in 1979 with the debut of the Gold Maple Leaf and 1988 saw it expand to not just one, but two additional coins. Introduced along with the Silver Maple Leaf in that year was the Platinum Maple Leaf.
The coins of the Canadian Maple Leaf Series are now available in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, but it is the gold and silver coins that most frequently capture the imagination of investors. Both coins represent icons of the industry. The Gold Maple Leaf was just the second gold bullion coin for investors when it debuted in 1979 and the Silver Maple was the first-ever .9999 pure silver coin in the world.
