A 5 kilo silver coin: 160.75 troy ounces of .999 silver struck as a single piece, in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with capsule and wooden presentation box. Legal tender of Armenia at 20,000 Drams, and one of very few 5 kg coins made anywhere. Priced live.

Buy the 2022 Armenian Noah’s Ark 5 kilo silver coin — five full kilograms, 160.75 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, struck as one piece. Very few mints attempt a coin at this weight, and this is the largest issue in the Noah’s Ark series. It arrives in a protective capsule inside a wooden presentation box.

What 160 Ounces in One Coin Actually Means

Five kilos is eleven pounds of silver in a single object. That changes the practicalities in ways a stack of one-ounce coins does not. You store one item, insure one item and hand over one item when you sell, which is simpler in every respect except one: you cannot divide it. There is no selling forty ounces out of a 5 kilo coin. It goes as a whole piece or not at all.

It also needs handling care that small coins do not. Leave it in the capsule. A coin this size is bought for its condition as much as its silver, and a fingerprint or a scuff on a mirror-bright surface is not something you can undo.

Why the Mintage Matters

The Noah’s Ark series began in 2011 with quarter-ounce, half-ounce and one-ounce coins. The large formats — 5 oz, 10 oz, 1 kilo and 5 kilo — joined in 2012, and their mintages have always been a fraction of the small ones. The highest 5 kilo mintage ever reported for the series was 476 pieces, in 2014. Most years run well below that.

That is the difference between this and generic bullion. A 5 kilo coin carries a premium over its silver content because the mintage is tiny and the format is rare, not simply because it is heavy.

The Design

The obverse carries the coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia: a quartered shield supported by a heraldic eagle and lion, with eagles and lions across the quarters and, at the centre, a small shield showing Noah’s ark resting on Mount Ararat.

The reverse shows the ark itself, gliding on the floodwaters as the sun rises behind Mount Ararat, with a dove carrying an olive branch in the foreground. Every coin in the series shares these designs, so the 5 kilo is the same artwork rendered at the largest scale the mint produces.

5 Kilo Coin or a Monster Box?

Both put a large quantity of silver in your hands, and they are not the same purchase. A sealed monster box gives you 500 individual coins at the lowest premium per ounce, fully divisible, easy to sell in pieces.

This coin gives you 160.75 ounces in one struck object with a mintage in the hundreds. You pay more per ounce and you give up divisibility. What you get back is scarcity and a piece that stands on its own rather than on its weight. Buy the box for silver; buy the coin for the coin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much silver is in a 5 kilo silver coin?

Five kilograms, which is 160.75 troy ounces, at .999 fineness.

Is the Armenian Noah’s Ark coin legal tender?

Yes. It carries a face value of 20,000 Drams issued by the Republic of Armenia, though the silver content is worth far more than the face value.

How many 5 kilo Noah’s Ark coins are made each year?

Mintages are small. The highest ever reported for the 5 kilo format was 476 coins in 2014, and most years are lower.

Should I take the coin out of its capsule?

No. On a coin of this size, surface condition carries real value, and marks from handling cannot be reversed.

Is a 5kg silver coin harder to sell than smaller coins?

Fewer buyers can write a cheque that size, so it takes longer to place than one-ounce coins. We buy them back directly, which is the simplest route.
