The US Mint introduced American Gold Eagles in 1986. It has since become one of the most popular and successful bullion coin programs in the world.

The first coin was the 1 oz American Gold Eagle, made of 22k gold and with legal tender status. The US Mint extended the Gold Eagle Collection by adding fractional sizes and different options of coin finishes.

These coins, in particular, are burnished versions, struck in the West Point branch, and carry the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their minting underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty marches forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation’s evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment. 

The obverse also displays the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year. The “W” mint mark is on the right.

Jennie Norris’ majestic bald eagle is portrayed in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and a highlighted hooked beak.

The reverse side inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS,” referring to weight, metal content, and face value.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.
