The 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz American Gold Eagles are historically the lowest minted in the series. In recent years, not only have mintage figures for these two coins dropped, but the spread between them has closed. For example, in 2015, there were 158,000 1/4 oz Gold Eagles sold compared to 75,000 1/2 oz Gold Eagles. With the 2019 release, 1/4 oz Gold Eagles had a mintage of 26,000 coins compared to 19,000 1/2 oz Gold Eagles.
On the obverse of 2020 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins is the image of Lady Liberty. This beautiful design came from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was designed in 1907. President Theodore Roosevelt personally asked Saint-Gaudens to create a new design for American gold coins to bring the imagery of the coins into the 20th century.
This design was originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933. It depicts Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks away from the city of Washington D.C. with the torch held high in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.
For the reverse design of 2020 American Gold Eagle coins, have an exclusive image created in 1986 by Miley Busiek. This imagery here includes a male bald eagle in flight over the family nest as a female eagle guards the young hatchling found within. All American Gold Eagle bullion coins are produced by the West Point Mint.
